NCPL Press Release

THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES LAUNCHES THE

NORTHERN CANADA PRODUCER LAUNCHER

The first-of-its-kind capacity-building program will offer training for Northern residents with no previous experience in the film & TV industry.

November 14, 2024 – The Northwest Territories Producers Association (NTMPA) and the Northwest Territories Film Commission (NWTFC) today proudly announce the launch of the Northern Canada Producer Launcher (NCPL), a joint program being offered exclusively to residents in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

Following the success of 2022’s Northern Canadian Producer Accelerator which focused on boosting the careers of professionals in the North working in the screen industry, this latest program will focus on training new content industry professionals in the North. The application portal opens November 13, 2024 and classes begin February 2025.

Like it’s predecessor, the NCPL is produced by Access Canada and offers access, training, community building, digital and in-person curriculum components led by industry experts, funding to cover required travel, financial assistance for participants to incorporate their own businesses, and a flexible schedule to accommodate up to ten (10) participants who are interested in pursuing a career in producing. In order to ensure it is best positioned to address the unique needs of Canada’s Northern industry, the NCPL will work closely with established organizations, professionals, and producers in the North to customize the program, including hiring a dedicated Program Facilitator who is both an experienced producer and a Northern resident.

“The NCPL will launch a new chapter for the creative content and capabilities coming out of the North,” said Jen Walden of the NTMPA. “Our goal is to help grow the film and media sector of the NWT. We’re excited to support content creators in the Territory with producing authentic Northern stories.”

“The Government of the Northwest Territories’ Film Commission is committed to the development and growth of the media sector by providing support for initiatives that encourage collaboration internally, laterally and connect our northern creators to the national and international content industry” says NWT Film Commissioner, Camilla MacEachern. “This program will not only identify new talent but provide a guided approach to empower our emerging producers to tell their own stories”.

“The success of our first program in 2022, the NCPA, reinforced the idea that Northern stories will resonate with a wide audience,” said Joel Fecht, VP of Sales & Business

Development at Access Canada. “This new program, the NCPL, will help build the foundation upon which more Northern stories can be told and more content produced in the North can be seen.”

The NCPL will take up to ten participants through a customized curriculum designed to train people with no prior experience in the film and tv industry to develop their ideas and industry knowledge so they can be pitched, sold, and ultimately produced at a professional level. The first cohort will be selected through an application process. Submissions will be open to all residents of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon. Full application details can be found here: www.northernproducer.ca

Funding for this program has been generously provided by Bell Fund, Canada Media Fund, Canada’s Regional Development Agency (CanNor), and Northwest Territories Film Commission.
